Research Question

What are the expectations of ESL students using the UWC? And how can we help them make best use of our services?

Description

This inquiry project addresses how the writing center can address the increasing number of multilingual students enrolled at UCF while maintaining its role as a writing center and not a language center. The presentation explains the importance of a linguistic approach to understanding and explaining English and grammar during a consultation.

Results

Suggests incorporating ESL specialists into the writing center. Also, tutor training could give consultants insight into helping multilingual students. Provides a guide from the Center for Multilingual Multicultural Studies.

Impact

The presentation offers concrete tips on speaking with NNES writers and explains what it means to respond thoughtfully during a consultation.
