Research Interests

My research interests include writing pedagogy, self-efficacy and agency for writing, digital writing practices, theory and practice of tutoring writing, and research methods for writing studies.

Recent Research Activities

My current research efforts reflect my interests in first-year composition pedagogy and writing center scholarship. I recently completed a cross-disciplinary pilot study using research coaches to improve undergraduate student confidence and identity with disciplinary research practices. Preliminary results of this study were presented at the International Writing Center Association Conference in October 2015, and several publications are planned over the next year.

My current research on first-year composition involves content analysis of over 8000 first-year student responses to "Writing is . . ." and "Research is . . ." in order to determine changes in understanding of concepts central to understanding writing. This project is in the analysis stage, and completion is not expected before summer 2016.

Following my interest in agency, learning, and writing, future research projects move more specifically into digital writing spaces to explore digital mediation of these beliefs about agency in writing. Prior and Shipka’s research findings that suggest chronotopically laminated literate activity among professional writers; however, most students in my study expressed strong desire to compartmentalize their “school writing” from their other literate activities, especially writing activities in social networks. I wonder if writing technologies, especially social digital technologies, are having some isolating effect on the sense of agency, or perhaps younger writers do not see affordances for writing in these digital technologies.
